The original purpose of this blog was to help people feed themselves on a low-carb, dairy-free diet.
The problem with this is that I hate the word “diet.” I make food for pleasure. Health is just an excellent side-effect. I have always naturally enjoyed healthy food, even as a young kid. I remember being in junior high and fighting with my mom over the merits of brown bread vs. white.
I don’t want this to be a “diet” blog. I want it to be a place where people can come and find recipes for food that makes your body feel good and tastes great. There’s no bigger motivation to eat healthy food than making it something you like to eat. So simple.
Much of this is based on Tim Ferriss’s Four Hour Body diet. I completely agree that dairy and gluten are hard on your body, I’ve experienced it first hand. But I hate that he outlaws fruit! Berries are good for you! Consume them! Plus, the food he eats is boring. The recipes on this blog all try to follow the basic guidelines while also trying to stay tasty.
Here are the rules for the Four Hour Body Diet:
- No bread, pasta, rice or the like
- No fruit. Too much sugar.
- Focus on slow-carb choices. Legumes, carbs from veggies, these are all fine. Stay away from quickly metabolized carbs like sugar and from grains.*
- Treat yourself one day a week. Everyone deserves a cheat day, and it is actually an important part of the program.
*If you are aiming for weightloss, cutting out grains is the most effective, as long as you’re making sure to get adequate mineral intake from other sources. Otherwise, grains like buckwheat and quinoa are fine.
